Unit 3 - Effective Sports Leadership

Describe using examples the key characteristics of an effective sports coach

To an athlete whether they are young, beginner athletes

Or professional athletes

They’re coach plays a huge role on the outcome in the athletes sporting career. The coach could make the difference in an athlete such as how successful an athlete could become and how well they perform.

The coach
The techniques that a coach uses to train a team or an athlete could make the difference on either being a good team or athlete and a bad one.
Some of the key aspects of being a good sports coach would be:

Knows the Sport
To be able to teach effectively the coach must have in-depth understanding of the sport from the fundamental skills to advanced tactics and strategy. Coaches may have experience playing, but not all former players make good coaches. Coaches must plan for the season, know the progressive nature of training adaptation, plan specific training sessions, create strategies, know the rules and regulations, recognise faults and provide a simple, structured environment for athletes to succeed.
Seeks Out New Information
While a good coach knows a great deal about a sport they must continue to learn and develop new training techniques. Staying up to date of new research, training and rehab information. A good coach would share their knowledge of the sport with their athletes, and example of this would be, if new rules had been introduced then the coach would teach thee in a training exercise.
Is a Motivator
motivation is all about personality. The successful coach is a motivator with a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the game and the players. Getting athletes to believe in themselves and achieve come far easier from some coaches than others. The coach who can motivate is able to generate the desire to stand out in their athletes. Motivation may athletes could be done by changing training sessions and using different coaching techniques for training that the athletes may find fun, different or challenging. When motivating a player, a good coach stresses trying to reach performance goals, not outcome goals. A coach should make sure that players understand that you can completely control your own effort and training, but can't control what your opponent does or the outcome of every match. A good coach should point out the players types of motivation such as intrinsic or extrinsic.
Always make sure there's enough equipment or kit for all. Create small groups of athletes rather than one big group. Avoid games where people have to sit out this could lead to a player feeling that they are not good enough which could lower their motivation levels

Knows The Athlete
Being aware of individual differences in athletes is also an important ingredient in coaching excellence. Yelling, screaming, and other emotional displays may work for some athletes but could have a devastating effect on others. Individualizing communication and motivation to specific players is key to team success. Paying attention to the player's emotions, strengths and weaknesses are the responsibility of a good coach.
Some athletes take longer than others to learn so adopt your style accordingly. Patience and praise work a lot better than criticism and shouting. A good coach should provide sessions on development on technical and physical strengths and weaknesses to either; the whole team or certain individuals. And provide support to athletes with personal issues such as outside influences and injuries, I have had a good example of this but when I dislocated my knee I wanted to join back a lot sooner than I wanted to, and my coach could see this and he would not let me train because he cared more about my safety than an advantage to the team.
Is an Effective Communicator
The effective coach is a coach confidently communicates well and exudes credibility, competence, respect and authority. A coach should be able to explain ideas clearly. A good coach an understand the way to talk to people for example they could motivate an athlete by shouting and commanding them powerfully, this could have an opposite effect on a different athlete which could upset them or frustrate them. Clear communication means setting defined goals, giving direct feedback such as strengths and weaknesses and reinforcing the key messages. Acknowledging success is also essential for good communication. An effective communicator would make sure that he is conveying messages to other people clearly and unambiguously.
Is a Good Listener
Part of communicating effectively is listening. A coach should be a compassionate ear and should welcome the players comments, questions and input. The effective coach will seek out information from the players. Finally, the good coach will be flexible and will use player feedback to modify the training plan if necessary.
Is Disciplined
Athletes need to stay to a reasonable set of rules both on and off the field and if these are ignored the coach is responsible for discipline. The effective coach clearly states a code of conduct up front and sticks to it. When violations do occur, discipline should follow. Evidence supports that for discipline to effectively change behaviour, it must be mild, prompt, and consistent. A good coach should teach the athletes about discipline and consequences if rules or laws are broken so that the athletes can avoid.
Leads by Example
The effective coach also leads by example. A good coach adheres to the same rules they expects of the players. A coach who wants respect should also show respect. A coach who expects players to remain positive needs to display a positive attitude. A coach who wants athletes to listen will also listen to the players.
Displays Commitment
The best coaches are in the profession because they love it. Besides being strongly committed to the sports and success the best coaches display a clear commitment to looking out for the best interest of the individual players.

Leadership                                                                                                       Understanding how to coach different ways is a good skill to have. Some coaches might only know or specialise in only one way of leadership. There are three different types of leadership they are:
Autocratic, this is telling an athlete to do a certain task or skill without taking advice off the athlete, this way of leadership is more helpful to professional athletes due to them having experience in their training programmes.
Declarative-free reign or laissez fair, the coach will take decisions from the athletes but still is responsible for the decisions made. This technique of leadership would be use in team building skills, so working together to make a decision.
Democratic, this is working with the athlete, such as telling them what to do but also taking their ideas into perspective. While the leader has the final decision and keeps control. This method of coaching to me is the most useful to a coach to my opinion because it is using the coaches knowledge to teach the athletes but the athletes are contributing to the session which would benefit the athletes and also the coach

A great coach is not easy to find and requires a very unique set of talents and skills. It's unlikely any one person will excel in all areas, but a good coach will have many of these qualities.

Professional coach
Graham Henry is a coach that I would promote as a very effective and successful coach.

My impression that I have that Graham Henry is a successful coach is because of his success record.
·        His first major role was coaching the Auckland NPC team from 1992 to 1997. During that time Auckland won the NPC 4 times in a row. He then went on to coach the Auckland Blues Super rugby team, winning the title two years in a row in 96 and 97.
·        Henry became coach of  Wales where he turned a struggling side into a competitive unit. After leading Wales to 11 consecutive wins and earning himself the nickname of "the great redeemer", Henry became the first foreign coach to supervise a Lions tour in 2001.
·        Henry’s career as an All black coach has been colorful to say the least. Highlights include several Tri Nations victories. A Grand Slam tour of Britain victory. But most notably his failure at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
·        Graham Henry collected a record four International Rugby Board Coach of the Year awards.

Graham Henry’s success record does not show that he was a good coach. I think that Graham Henry was an effective coach because of his methods and techniques in coaching.
The main thing that I think of Graham Henry as being and effective sports coach is his understanding of the sport that he coaches and his understanding of being a good coach a good example of this would be him quoting in a book “No aspect of coaching is more important, You must address all aspects” I think that this quote shows the type of coach and what qualities that he has because, of the fact that he is giving advice to other coaches, on what is the best way to coach and guiding them to not just go for the easy option, and give all that you can by working on all the aspects.
